Laser Hair Removal
When hair grows in unwanted places, there are plenty of methods to remove it. The current gold standard in lasting, often permanent hair removal is laser hair removal.
We offer laser hair removal for patients sick of the daily grind of shaving. Further, the underlying skin maintains a silky smooth texture from the lack of shaving.
Why laser hair removal?
As one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in Australia, laser hair removal offers rapid, effective and safe results. It is perfect for patients who are sick of shaving, waxingor tweezing unwanted hair. Further, it can be done almost anywhere on the body. It can remove long term scarring from ingrown hairs and prevent new ones from appearing. It also helps clear irritated skin as a result of waxing or shaving. There is little ongoing hair maintenance and as hair reduces, only a few top up treatments are required. In the long run, it is more cost effective than other hair removal methods.
Thorough preparation for best results
When you first come in to schedule your laser hair removal, your therapist will give you brochures with preparation guidelines. She will answer any questions at this time, and help you understand the best way to prepare for the procedure. We’ve included a few of these guidelines to give you some idea of what you should expect. It’s first important to understand that laser hair removal is an actual medical procedure, requiring extensive training on the part of your therapist. For this reason, you should fully consider all guidelines set forth before your procedure.
Does it hurt?
Most clients say the laser feels like a rubber band lightly flicking on the skin. The sensation does not linger and disappears immediately. Post treatment, the area will feel warm as if it has been exposed to sun, but Laser Aid will soothe and continue to cool the area.
Laser hair removal at Lasethetics Laser Clinics
When patients come to us for laser hair removal, we take a proactive approach towards helping them find cosmetic peace. Your treatment will not only be delivered by some of the most skilled therapist around, it will also be done in a soothing, comfortable environment to give you safe and pain-free treatment.
At Lasethetics Laser Clinics, we use Candela GentleLase Pro, most effective removal of unwanted hair and the most precise and gentle treatment for your skin. It utilizes a long pulse high-energy Alexandrite laser which emits wavelengths of light that are absorbed by pigment in the hair. Once absorbed, the laser energy transforms to heat and destroys the hair follicle without affecting the surrounding skin. Laser light is one pure colour (monochromatic), slow to diverge (collimated) and totally reinforcing (coherent) which makes it very powerful as 100% of the light is used in the treatment of hair reduction.
At Lasethetics Laser Clinics we do not use IPL as it is not monochromatic, collimated or coherent. The GentleLase system is used in conjunction with a Dynamic Cooling Device which cools the upper layers of the skin. An additional skin cooling system (Cryo 6) is used in conjunction with the laser to provide optimal patient comfort.
How does laser hair removal work?
All hair grows in 3 stages known as the Anagen, Catagen and Telogen phases. The laser can only effectively target the hairs that are in the Anagen growth phase. That’s because in this stage, the hair follicle is lined with stem cells that once destroyed prevent new hairs from returning.
Generally, only one third of the hairs are in the Anagen phase at any given time, which is why after your first treatment you should see a reduction in hair by one third. For best results, it is important to return to your next session as soon as you begin to see the hairs returning. Every part of the body is on a different cycle and hairs in certain parts may return sooner than others.
A rough guide for clients to follow is:
Face: 1 – 4 weeks. (males may require more frequent treatments)
Body: 4 – 8 weeks
*It is important to note that every individual is unique and your treatment intervals may be shorter or longer depending on many external factors such as genetics, hormones, stress, and other environmental factors.
During laser hair removal
Laser hair removal is non-invasive, and most patients require no anesthetic. The laser is then adjusted to the correct setting for your hair’s color, thickness and location, as well as your skin color. Your therapist will also give you eye protection, as the laser produces a very bright light with each pulse.
After delivering an initial pulse of light on the treatment area, your therapistwil l wait a moment and watch the area. She is looking to make sure the settings on the laser were correct so that the rest of the treatment is as effective as possible. After your first appointment, you may be scheduled for a follow-up treatment. Laser hair removal is typically done over 8-12 appointments until the hair stops growing. In most cases, laser hair removal is permanent reduction.
When the procedure is completed, you may be given ice packs, cold compress, cooling or anti-inflammatory creams or lotions to ease any discomfort. You may schedule your next treatment four weeks later. You’ll receive treatments until hair stops growing.
Most clients will achieve a reduction within 6-12 treatments, depending on the area being treated. Hormonal areas, for men and women, treatment to the face, back, upper back, sides of back, shoulders and back of thighs will require more treatments possibly even indefinitely as the body stimulates the production of new hairs. In between your treatments, you should have no hairs coming through. As soon as you begin to see new hairs coming through, that’s when you should come back for your next treatment. Your intervals will depend on the area being treated, your individual hair growth cycle, and the number of treatments you have previously received. As you progress through your course, your intervals will lengthen between visits. Lasethetics Laser Clinics cannot guarantee individual results and as such has made no promises to the number of treatments required to obtain desired results.
Clients with darker hair and lighter skin will generally receive better results. Clients with blonde, red or white hair do not respond to treatment. Darker skinned or tanned clients will require more treatments.
It is important to ensure that you prepare for your laser hair removal treatment in the best possible way to achieve optimal results. The area being treated must be kept out of the sun for up to 2 weeks prior to treatment. Recent sun exposed clients cannot receive treatment for their safety and will be rescheduled. All spray or ‘fake’ tans in the treatment area must be scrubbed off completely prior to commencing any laser treatment. All hair in the treatment area must be shaved the night before. Never wax or epilate, only shave as the laser needs the hair to be in the follicle in order to achieve desired results. Bleach should not be used prior to treatment as the laser will not work on any hair without pigment.
Hairs that have been treated can take two to three weeks before falling out. Black dots may appear which are simply lasered hair follicles sitting underneath the skin. These will clear up with the natural process of the skin pushing the hair to the surface. Exfoliating after 5 days of treatment will help this process.
Use Skinstitut Laser Aid as frequently as necessary for at least 5 days. A cold compress may be used in addition to the gel to assist in drawing heat out of the area. Never itch or rub the area. For the next 48 hours, refrain from heavy exercise, hot yoga, hot showers (warm is okay), heaters and/or blow drying the area, as well as the use of swimming pools saunas, spas or steam rooms. Apply sunscreen on treated areas that may be exposed to the sun.
Direct sunlight should be avoided for up to 2 weeks post-treatment even with the use of a sunscreen. Active cosmeceuticals as well as any other products that contain harsh chemicals and/or fragrances should be avoided for 48 hours.
